How to Install a Garage Door on Your Own

We don’t typically recommend that beginner DIYers take on garage door installation, because it’s tricky, and can be potentially dangerous. If you are, however, an avid handyman or woman, we know you won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Here are some pro tips we can share to make installation easier and safer… We still recommend hiring a professional to do the job, though!

Garage Door Installation Tips

Like with any project, you must start with research. Research as much as you can about the type of garage door you’re installing, as well as best practices for the material, and the garage door motor.  Once you’re prepared with knowledge, you can prepare your garage for installation.

Step 1: Create a Clear Space

A clear working space is a safe working space. Garage door installation is no small feat, so you’ll need room to move around freely without falling over a stray gardening tool. Remove all the vehicles and other clutter to keep yourself and your belongings safe.

Step 2: Out with the Old

You can now start dismantling your old garage door. If it is set on a torsion spring, be extremely careful as this could go very wrong. Your research needs to include how to do this safely. You can dispose of your old door by leaving it at a rubbish dump, or (depending on the condition) selling it on a second-hand site.

Step 3: Prepare Your Garage Door Frame

You need to prepare the garage door frame for the new door by checking for any signs of rust, obstructions, or corrosion. If there is any, and it isn’t too bad, you can spray on some garage door lubricant and scrub off any excess. You’ll also need to use a level to ensure it is square.

Step 4: Strategise Your Garage Door Installation

You’ll need to ensure that you fully understand the instruction diagram on your new door before starting. Lay out all the pieces on the floor the way they will be configured when fully assembled, and ensure you understand how it all fits together.

Step 5: Fasten Your New Garage Door

It’s important to use new fasteners and equipment on your new door. Make them tight, but don’t strip them, and ensure you follow all the instructions.

Garage Door Installation Cost

These are extremely basic, general tips and there is a lot more technicality that goes into garage door installation. In most cases, it’s best to get it done by professionals to ensure it’s done right. It will end up costing more in the long run if there are necessary repairs, etc.
